If you’re running Google Ads for your pool service company, there’s a pretty good chance you’re making a mistake that’s costing you money every single month.

I’ve audited dozens of pool service Google Ads accounts over the years, and I see this same issue pop up time and time again.

The mistake?

Sending all of your traffic to your website’s homepage instead of a dedicated landing page.

Look, I get it. You’ve already got a website, so why would you need to build out something separate just for your ads?

The answer is simple: conversion rate.

At the end of the day, your Google Ads campaign’s success comes down to how many of those clicks you’re paying for actually turn into leads.

When you send traffic to your homepage, you’re leaving money on the table.

Let me break down why this is such a huge problem, and what you should be doing instead.

Why Your Homepage Is Killing Your Conversion Rate

When someone clicks on your Google Ad after searching for “pool service near me” or “pool cleaning company”, they’re ready to take action.

They’ve got a problem (their pool needs servicing), and they’re actively looking for someone to solve it.

But when you send them to your homepage, here’s what typically happens…

They land on your site and see a bunch of different things competing for their attention.

There’s your navigation menu with links to your About page, Services page, Contact page, Blog, and who knows what else.

Maybe you’ve got a slideshow cycling through different images.

There might be links to your social media profiles.

You’ve probably got content about all of the different services you offer – pool cleaning, repair, equipment installation, renovations, etc.

Every single one of those things is a distraction.

Each link is an opportunity for that visitor to click away from the main action you want them to take, which is becoming a lead.

The more options you give someone, the less likely they are to take any action at all.

It’s not that your website is bad. Websites need all of that stuff to rank in Google organically and to provide information to people who are doing research.

But when someone is clicking on a paid ad, they’re not in research mode anymore.

They’re in “I need this problem solved now” mode.

The Numbers Don’t Lie

Here’s how the math plays out in real terms.

Let’s say you’re spending $2,000/month on Google Ads for your pool service company.

Your average cost per click is around $14.

That means you’re getting about 143 clicks per month.

If you’re sending traffic to your homepage:

Your conversion rate is probably somewhere around 8-10%.

Let’s be generous and say it’s 10%.

That’s 13-14 leads at roughly $143 per lead.

If you’re sending traffic to a landing page:

A well-designed landing page should convert at least 20% of your traffic.

That same 143 clicks now turns into 28-29 leads at $68 per lead.

Same ad spend. Double the leads. Half the cost per lead.

That’s the difference we’re talking about here.

What Makes Landing Pages Convert Better?

Landing pages work better because they’re laser-focused on getting the visitor to take action.

Here’s what a good landing page for pool service ads should have:

A clear headline that matches what they searched – If they searched for pool cleaning, your headline should be about pool cleaning. Not about your company history or all of your services.

No navigation menu – Remove all the distractions. The only actions they should be able to take are calling you or filling out a form.

One clear offer – Whether it’s a free estimate, a discount on their first service, or something else, make it clear and make it compelling.

Trust builders – Reviews, testimonials, badges, years in business. Show them why they should choose you over the competition.

Multiple calls to action – Your phone number should be prominently displayed at the top of the page and throughout. Make it easy for them to take the next step.

Mobile optimized – The majority of your traffic is coming from phones. If your landing page doesn’t work well on mobile, you’re dead in the water.

The entire page should be designed with the goal in mind of converting visitors into leads.

“But I Don’t Know How To Build Landing Pages”

I hear this one a lot.

The good news is that you don’t need to be a web designer or know how to code to build a landing page.

There are plenty of tools out there that make it pretty simple. Things like Unbounce, Leadpages, or even just using a page builder on WordPress.

You can also hire someone to build them for you. A good landing page doesn’t have to cost thousands of dollars.

The important thing is that you have them in place before you start running ads, or at the very least, get them set up as soon as possible if you’re already running campaigns.

You Might Need More Than One Landing Page

Another thing that’s important to keep in mind is that if you’re running ads for multiple services, you probably need multiple landing pages.

If someone searches for “pool repair near me”, they shouldn’t land on a page that’s talking about pool cleaning services.

Keep things relevant.

The more aligned your ad and landing page are to what someone actually searched for, the better your conversion rate is going to be.

This doesn’t mean you need to design a completely unique page for every single keyword though.

You can create a template and then swap out the content and copy to make it relevant for each service you’re advertising.

The Bottom Line

If you’re running Google Ads for your pool service company and you’re sending traffic to your homepage, you’re making your campaign work harder than it needs to.

You’re paying for clicks that aren’t converting because you’re giving people too many options and too many distractions.

Landing pages aren’t complicated, and they don’t have to be expensive.

But they can make a massive difference in how many leads you generate and how much you’re paying for each one.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to conversion rate.

If you can improve that number, everything else gets easier.

So, if you take anything away from this post, it should be to stop sending your Google Ads traffic to your homepage.

Build out some landing pages, test them, and watch your cost per lead drop while your lead volume goes up.
